GEOTECHNICAL AND SOIL MECHANIC LABORATORY

The Geotechnical and Soil Mechanic Laboratory is one of the most important laboratories in the Civil Engineering Department. The laboratory is fully equipped with modern facilities and machines to meet international standards requirements at high level, accommodating most of laboratory and field soil testing. This laboratory is supported by a highly qualified and experienced technical staff not only meeting all expectations and the needs of teaching and research but also the services and consulting to academic institutes, private companies and governmental agencies.

Tests are performed at professional level, since the main machines are connected with computer-controlled recording and analysis of test results using Autonomous Data Acquisition Unit. Conventional laboratory equipments including Triaxial machine, Autonomous Data Acquisition Unit (ADU), Unconfined Compression machine, Direct/Residual Shear apparatus, Oedometer and Rowe cell for consolidation tests, Permeability apparatus, Compaction and CBR, Vane Shear Test apparatus, Test Sieves (BS & ASTM), Hydrometer Test apparatus, Soil Index Properties apparatus, Sand Cone apparatus, Electrical Resistivity meter, and Soil Chemical Test apparatus.

The Laboratory is mainly equipped to conduct standard soil testing according to ASTM standard. Engineering properties of soil can be grouped by the following tests: Soil Strength Tests include Unconsolidated Undrained (UU) Test, Consolidated Drained (CD) Test, Consolidated Undrained (CU) Test, Unconfined Compressive Strength Test, Direct and Residual Shear Box Test, and Vane Shear Test. Soil Consolidation Tests include One-Dimensional Consolidation Test, Measure Consolidation Characteristic, Soil Permeability Coefficient Determination, and Swell/Collapse tests.



Soil Permeability Tests include Falling Head Permeability Test and Constant Head Permeability Test. Particle Size and Index Properties Testing include Grain and Particle size determination Sieve and Hydrometer Tests), Liquid Limit Test, and Plastic Limit Test. Soil Compaction Testing & CBR Tests include Standard Proctor Test, Modified Proctor Test, and CBR Test. Another test is Soil and Water Chemical Tests including Content Test: Sulfate, Chloride, Carbonate Organic Matter and Gypsum , Conductivity Test, and pH Measurement Test.


The advanced soil mechanics testing is used for instruction in specialized soil and rock testing such as stress path testing and at the same time provides opportunities for research at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Facilities are available for a variety of physical modeling studies such as fluid flow through soils.

The geotechnical and soil mechanic laboratory also has the equipments to characterize soil properties in the field. Our in field soil testing including Field Density Test, Manual Subsurface Boring Tests, Soil Sampling and Investigation, SPT Test and Soil Layer Classification, Field Vane Shear Test, Load Bearing Test, Dynamic Cone Penetrometer Test, Digital Load Sell Penetrometer, Electronic Ground Water Checking, Insitu and lab Electrical Resistivity Test, etc.
